Brazil seeks to stave off EU demands for beef baS

European Agriculture Commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel has joined members of the European Parliament in demanding a crackdown on imported Brazilian beef because some of it allegedly originates in regions subject to an EU ban. Brazil's agriculture minister Reinhold Stephanes has denied any knowledge of falsified Brazilian certificates of origin being used to introduce illegal beef to Europe, but he recently introduced new certificates that incorporate state-of-the-art security features (see FCN July 9, Page 17). By doing so, he also hopes to prove that all of the meat contained in shipments destined for the EU originate in Brazilian states at low risk for foot-and-mouth disease.
