U.S. and Chinese researchers are developing nutrientrich, pest- and drought-resistant high yield transgenic rice varieties dubbed Green Super Rice (GSR). Writing in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Qifa Zhang, a researcher with Huazhong Agricultural University in Wuhan, China, reports that most desirable traits necessary for the super rice have already been isolated. "Development of GSR, with improved insect and disease resistances ... drought resistance, high grain yield, and superior quality, is critical for a more sustainable rice production," she said in an on-line article published Gct. 8.
