Several species of the genus Passiflora are cultivated for the production of their fruits called passion fruits. Passiflora edulis is the most widely cultivated species and produces the maracuja, used worldwide in fruit juices. By combining data obtained by two research groups in France and in Brazil, the present study aims at clarifying the systematics of the genus Passiflora and establishing the phylogenetic relationships among species. We obtained DNA sequences from two nuclear regions and two chloroplast regions for a sampling of thirty species belonging to the genus Passiflora. This sampling represents three of the four subgenera recognized at present in the genus. We used the data to reconstruct a molecular phylogeny of the genus, including data from the genus Adenia sp. Forsk. (used as outgroup to root the trees). The results obtained were compared with the classifications based on morphology and discussed taking into account the relatively limited number of species represented in this phylogenetic analysis.
