The objectives are outlined for the 19th congress of the European Federation of pastures, held in France. A major theme was the multifunctionality of prairies, with reference to plant selection and breeding, nitrogen fertilizers and maize silage. Three challenges were defined for the congress: widening of disciplinary fields; renewal of dialogue between research, development and economics; and dialogue between generations. The organization of the congress on the theme of multifunctionality is described.
