In this issue of Medical Teacher, Rethans et al. provide a detailed overview of how standardized patients, simulated patients and patient actors, collectively referred to as SPs, are used at 13 medical schools in Belgium and the Netherlands. Their message, which is certainly generalizable to other medical school curricula, is that, collectively, SPs can be used in many different ways to educate and assess medical students. The specific role of the SP, and how the simulated encounters are structured, depends on the learning goals of the educational or assessment activity.
