Team-based learning (TBL) is a method of teaching and learning that was first developed by Larry Michaelsen for business education (Michaelsen et al. 2002) and then later introduced to health professions education (Michaelsen et al. 2008) with many of the earliest publications arising from educators at Baylor College of Medicine and Wright State University School of Medicine in the USA (Seidel and Richards 2001; Hunt et al. 2003; Searle et al. 2003; Levine et al. 2004; Nieder et al. 2005; Haidet et al. 2006). Over the last decade, the popularity of TBL has grown enormously, perhaps in response to an increasing awareness of the importance teams play in delivering quality patient care (Morrison et al. 2010); or perhaps in response to demands on faculty time and effort in both research and clinical care that directly compete with educational commitments; or perhaps simply because TBL is more fun than lecture or more traditional education formats (this author's opinion)!
