The Hofstee method can be used for standard setting examinations. It requires the production of a cumulative frequency curve from exam data on which four judgements concerning upper and lower pass scores and upper and lower failure rates are superimposed. A rectangle is drawn to connect these four values and a diagonal line is drawn from the co-ordinates of the highest fail rate with lowest pass mark and the lowest fail rate with the highest pass mark. A line drawn vertically from the point of intersection of this diagonal with the cumulative frequency curve hits the score axis at the specified pass mark.
