For cancer treatment and prevention, few things are more important than gaining a better understanding of the underlying genetic mutations responsible for tumorigenesis. Until recently, new cancer treatments were largely the result of chance discoveries. Now researchers can develop new therapies [see "Targeting Cancer with Chinese Characteristics," pg.37] and predict which patients are most likely to respond to drug treatments based on the genetic code underpinning the disease.
