Where would mineralogy be without those packrat systematic collectors? Those curious hoarders of all things mineralogical have often been the source of new discoveries in old specimens, and the recent confirmation and description of lavendulan from the prolific Sterling Mine is one such tale. The late Robert Trimmingham of Livennore, California was one of those systematic collectors. A long-time customer of many mineral species dealers, Bob had amassed a rich and diverse collection by the time of his passing last year. His collection found its way to Rock Currier's Jewel Tunnel Imports, and it was there that one of us (FC) uncovered the first known specimen of lavendulan, described here. The specimen (see figure 1), one of many Franklin-Sterling Hill pieces in Bob's deep locality collection, had been labeled as aurichalcite and had originally been purchased from Parker Minerals in 1979. It remained in Bob's collection for the ensuing three-plus decades (see figure 2) awaiting further study.
