Professional geographic imaging software is now available at no cost to children and teachers in Montana's public schools. The project is a joint-venture among ESRI, ERDAS and the National Aeronautic and Space Administration's Earth Observing System (EOS) Education Project at the University of Montana. In its first year, the GIS-4-Montana Education Initiative has the potential to reach about 155,000 children.To make the project possible, EOS solicited help from ESRI in Redlands, CA, ERDAS in Atlanta, GA and volunteers from Montana's GIS (geographic information system) professionals. ESRI provided an ArcView GIS state license for all K-12 public schools in Montana. ArcView is a desktop GIS and mapping software program. It allows data visualization, query analysis and the ability to create and edit geographic data. ERDAS enhanced the project with the ArcView Image Analysis extension.
