The MIME bylaws, article one, section two, state that AIME is and shall be organized and operated exclusively "to advance the knowledge of the arts and sciences involved in the production and use of useful minerals, metals, energy sources and materials, and to record and disseminate significant developments in these areas of technology for the benefit of mankind." One of the by which AIME has been pursuing these objectives has been through support of programs such as Transformations These programs were recognized as umbrella or "overarching" programs. In August 1993. the AIME Board of Trustees reviewed a proposal to tstablish "member-direct" programs. The objective was to explore ways by which a part of the AIME annual income could be distributed to the four member societies. The money would be used to carry out programs for scholarships, local section development, young leader development, etc.
