The Antamina project is setting new standards in environmental, health and safety (EHS) management for large, international mining projects. This is especially evident in the area of compliance standards, permitting requirements, lending institution involvement, public consultation, community involvement, medical support services and safety culture. Mining projects have always presented challenges to the management of EHS. Typically the large the project and proximity to people, the greater the challenges. In addition, there has been an increasing rend that has spread internationally to greater regulation of the industry.When al of these factors are combined into one project, they present a number of unique challenges to the EHS professional, to mine management and to the project's owners. This has been the case with the Antamina project. This article presents Antamina's approach to EHS management, which the authors believe can be applied to other mining projects.
