Durban Roodepoort Deep (DRD) is South Africa's fourth largest gold producer. DRD has bucked the labor-slashing trend seen in the gold industry by creating more than 2,500 jobs within two years. DRD has already increased its workforce by 1,270 in the last year and intends to duplicate that this year. The South African gold industry says that rising gold prices have given producers the chance to open up new orebodies. Despite that, the gold producers are cutting jobs.
