If the economics work, Minnesota could see a large copper-nickel mine by 2006. Teck Cominco wants to test mine 32 kt (35,000 st) of Mesaba ore from the 950-hm~2 (2,344-acre) Minnamax site, south of Babbitt, MN. The company is currently seeking permits from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources to conduct a preliminary environmental review. The environmental review must be completed before the company can get permits to conduct test mining. Teck Cominco hopes to extract the sample by the spring of 2003.
