The US Department of the Interior is considering a plan that would turn over to private industry nearly 3,500 department jobs. Interior Secretary Gale Norton said in a memo to department employees that during the next two years each bureau and office within the Interior Department would be identifying which activities could be "subject to competition" with private companies. Norton's move was prompted by instructions from the White House's Office of Management and Budget for each cabinet department to consider how many of its jobs could be turned over to the private sector."Competition spurs better performance," Norton said in her memo. "This is the start of a process to meet a larger goal of examining over the next five years at least half of the commercial functions now being performed by Interior employees," she said. The Interior Department currently employs about 73,000 people.
