Biodiversity offsetting is becoming an increasingly important tool in the realm of environmental planning and regulation in the UK. DEFRA's recent natural environment white paper outlined the government's vision for the environment over the next 50 years, responding to last year's Lawton Review, "Making Space for Nature". DEFRA's strategy calls for a "move from net biodiversity loss to net gain, by supporting healthy, well-functioning ecosystems and coherent ecological networks".The report also calls for the establishment of a voluntary approach to biodiversity offsets and testing that approach in pilot areas.
