An extension to sand and gravel extraction at Farnley Haughs, Riding Mill, by RMC Aggregates (Northern) Ltd was approved by Northumberland CC in April. This planning application was submitted almost three years ago by the then operators, SITA, when concerns were raised about the operations on the existing site including lack of progress on restoration. The operators subsequently decided to sell the site and requested that the application was held in abeyance. RMC obtained an interest in the proposed extension area to work and restore the land in the event of permission being granted. On completion of aftercare the land will revert to a private owner. During 2002, RMC decided to pursue the application which proposed a 4.7ha extension south east of the worked area, within the approved Green Belt and an area of High Landscape Value. It was proposed to extract 180,000t over 3 years in two main phases which will be progressively restored to a lake with silt flats, shingle beaches and seasonal wetland areas together with wildflower meadow and woodland. The extension was a preferred area for extraction in the Minerals Local Plan. The proposal would not cause significant adverse effects.
