Proposals by RMC Aggregates (Eastern Counties) Ltd (now Cemex) to extract sand and gravel as an extension of Manor Pit, Baston, with restoration in part to agriculture and in part to a nature conservation based water area were recommended to be approved by Lincolnshire CC in July. The application was accompanied by an Environmental Statement. Reserves at Manor Pit were nearing exhaustion and the extension was vital for its continuing operation. Planning permission was sought to extract 2.90Mt of sand and gravel from an area of 58.8ha, comprised of two distinct areas of land where extraction would take place, known as 'Front and Rear Fen' and 'North Meadow South', together with land connecting them with the existing plant site at Manor Pit. Front and Rear Fen (21.0ha) is to the southeast, on the same side of Baston Outgang Road as the plant site, and North Meadow South (34.5ha) is to the northwest. To help screen the proposed workings, an advance scheme of hedge planting had already been implemented in both areas on the boundaries adjacent to the highway. It is estimated that Front and Rear Fen contains 1.15Mt of sand and gravel and North Meadow South, 1.75Mt. At the current rate of output (0.48Mtpa), this would extend the life of the quarry by six years.
