Measurement capability of a new planar layered sensor for measurement of liquid components

In this paper, we evaluate the measurement capability of a new planar layered sensor for concentration measurement of the liquid components. In the proposed sensor, the polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) films with indium tin oxide electrodes as the transparent conductive electrodes are respectively arranged on the surface of a light-emitting diode (LED) and a photodiode. The optical reflectance is measured using the LED and the photodiode, and the electrical conductance and time delay of a reflected ultrasonic wave are measured using the PVDF films. Therefore, the optical, electrical and ultrasonic properties in the same space of the liquid are obtained by the proposed sensor. First of all, three components in the sample liquid are estimated by the proposed sensor. In the experiment, the concentrations of the three components--amaranth powder as food red color, glycerol and sodium chloride--in the liquid were respectively estimated by the proposed sensor. Next, each value measured by the proposed sensor was assessed. The results indicated the usefulness of the proposed planar sensor for concentration measurement of liquid components.
