Nature Genetics recently published three papers in concert that examine the genetic profile of bladder cancer, all of which focused on STAG2 as a key gene implicated in tumorigenesis. The gene encodes a subunit of the cohesion complex that keeps sister chromatids together after replication and is also involved in spindle pole assembly during mitosis. However, the clinical relevance of STAG2 as a biomarker for this disease remains unclear, with discordant findings emerging from association studies with prognosis and progression.
