It has been proposed that food-specific IgG antibodies play a role in the underlying mechanism of non-IgE-mediated food allergy and that the measurement of these antibodies in patients with suspected food allergy may be useful in identifying offending foods. Evidence has suggested that elimination diets based on food-specific IgG measurement can lead to improvements in chronic ill health symptoms. This paper examines evidence from studies on food-specific IgG measurement and dietary change. Aspects considered include: food-specific IgG tests; effectiveness of IgG test-based elimination diets; and food-specific IgG titres in patients. Findings indicate that the use of fully standardized clinically evaluated food-specific IgG tests as a basis for elimination diets could lead to a considerable improvement in many patients' quality of life.
