While assisting with the update of Western Weeds: a Guide to the Weeds of Western Australia, it was discovered that Batson [see Australian Journal of Botany (1998) 46, 697-705] identified Agrostis castellana as the dominant species in bent grass pastures in southeastern Australia, which had been previously reported as being dominated by Agrostis capillaris. In the census of Western Australian plants, FloraBase, A. capillaris var. capillaris and A. capillaris var. aristata were listed as occurring in Western Australia, and under the same names were treated, described and keyed out. Upon examination, the PERTH collections of A. capillaris var. aristata were all found to fit the description of A. castellana as given by Batson. The census has therefore been updated and now lists A. capillaris and A. castellana as introduced weeds in Western Australia.
