It has long been supposed that giant cells that arise by en-doreduplication (polyploidy) and/or incomplete cytokinesis (multinucleation) have no future. Although giant cells can survive a remarkably long period of time, any attempt to "move on" in the cell cycle has generally been seen as suicidal, resulting in a "mitotic catastrophe". The evidence to support this is incontrovertible. However, over the last few years, several groups have independently shown that, while most giant cells do succumb in time, it is not true in all cases. Experimental evidence has emerged that clearly shows giant cells undergoing a form of reduction from which small cells with a quasi-diploid or para-diploid chromosome complement are among the "progeny" that have the properties of the rapidly proliferating pool of cell that first gave rise to the tumour.
