Trials with the grape cultivars Johanniter, Solaris and Bronner in Eastern Switzerland

Since 1994, trials have been carried out with the white interspecific cultivars Johanniter, Solaris and Bronner in Wadenswil. It has been observed that these cultivars are more or less resistant to downy mildew, including in a few locations under commercial farming conditions. Concerning powdery mildew, no obvious disease symptoms were noticeable, except in 1996, on Bronner variety. The cultivars also proved to be quite resistant to botrytis bunch rot. On the average, yields were approximately 0.8to 1.1 kg/m~2 and Johanniter and Bronner had to be thinned. Must density was around 1,080 for Johanniter and Bronner and for the very early ripening Solaris it was 1,098. Wine of Johanniter has a nice fruity to strong bouquet. On the palate it may be characterized as fragrant and harmonious. It reminds of Riesling, with a good structure and a fine grapefruit tone. For cultivation, the variety needs good Pinot noir conditions. Solaris is slightly fruity, but more neutral than Johanniter. It usually has agood structure, a full body and enough acidity. This cultivar can be planted in Muller-Thurgau sites. Bronner often has a bouquet reminiscent of ripe apples. On the palate, it is sometimes slightly bitter with a medium structure. This late ripening variety needs a very good Pinot noir situation, unlike our experimental site.
