Dozens of machine-tool models, differing significantly in their construction but realizing the same fundamental tooth machining scheme, are used to fabricate the conical and hypoidal gears with circular-arc teeth [1]. In this connection it is customary to divide the meshing synthesis problem into two parts: the selection of the technological parameters, and their conversion to the adjustments of the specific machine. We shall examine only the first part of the synthesis problem. It is assumed that the gear is cut by the bilateral or pivoting technique, and the pinion is cut by the unilateral technique. We shall study only the process of the finish cutting (or grinding) of the teeth, since the adjustments that are used for finish machining can be used for the rough machining of the gear, and the adjustments that are used for the finish machining of either (convex or concave) side of the teeth can be used for the rough machining of the pinion.
