Anthony (Joe) Judice, a farmer from New Iberia, Louisiana, crouches on a mountain of bagasse (photo), the sweet-smelling residue of crushed sugarcane stalks. Behind him looms the mill that serves his farm and 220 other farmer-members of Cajun Sugar Cooperative. Across a dirt parking lot stands Acadia Board Company, an innovative 15 million dollar factory that is turning bagasse into DuraCane, a high-quality particleboard. Nearby, test plots of ash and other waste from sugar milling lie waiting to betransformed into yet another new product: sugar-based compost.
