While carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is perceived frequently as work-related in the USA, European researchers are less convinced about its association with physical workplace exposures. A recent cross-sectional study by Burt et al on risk factors for CTS based on a well-described exposure assessment and diagnostic consensus criteria found dominant hand CTS in 11.9% of the study population. I invite readers for a discussion about the nature of the many alleged cases of CTS in this and other studies. I question the applied diagnostic criteria and suspect ailments other than CTS in some workers and that inaccurate diagnostics may affect their future health.
