New Zealand's fledgling olive industry looked to the future with an ambitious conference in Wellington last month, organised by industry body Olives New Zealand (ONZ). Already the industry has proved it can produce extra virgin oil to compete and winagainst the best in the world. This is happening despite a climate colder than is traditionally associated with olive production. But there are critical issues looming up including cohesion and communication, developing sufficient resources to push the industry forward, research and marketing. The industry has been surviving on a shoestring and dependent on the goodwill and unstinting efforts of talented and committed leaders.
