In 2010 the Lothians and Borders Region ofRSFS had a tour of Glentress, with students from SAC (West) and Edinburgh University, in celebration of the opening of the new visitor centre, The Peel, at Glentress in July 2011 it was decided that a joint history of the development of Forestry Commission in the upper Tweed Valley should be prepared as a record for Scottish Forestry.Contributors: Chris Badenoch, John Blythe, Norman Brown, Hugh McKay, Andy Neustein, James Ogilvie, John Ogilvie, BarrieTeasdale, Jeremy Thompson, Christina Tracey.The almost complete removal of any woodland and scrub from Peeblesshire (Tweeddale) by the sixteenth century is a matter of record (see for example the circa 1590's surveys of Timothaeus Pont published in Blaeus Atlas Novus of the early seventeenth century; the 16th century records of the Exchequer Rolls of Scotland, and the Justice Ayres Records for Peebles.) In 1988 the Nature Conservancy Council (NCC) Ancient Woodland provisional register, estimated a figure of around 0.17% of the land surface for ancient woodland over 2 ha. Adjacent Selkirkshire was much better but still "bare" by the standards of other areas of lowland Scotland, almost all the 'stedes' of Ettrick Forest being let for grazing by 1500, including those 'stedes' of the Tweed Ward which came across the watershed between Yarrow and Tweed into what is now Cardrona, Elibank and Yair forests.
