The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has been providing objective and credible science to the nation for nearly 125 years. The USGS has a broad mandate within the Department of the Interior to provide the monitoring, mapping and researchrequired to protect, preserve and promote sustainable use of the natural resources of our ntional domain, including the coastal realm. The USGS mission includes respoinsibility for understanding and assessing the resource and hazard potential of our public lands - which includes nearly three million square miles of the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone.
