At the opening of the First International Marine Protected Areas (MPA) Congress recently in Australia,nations across the world were called upon to step up and scale up their efforts in protecting the world's marine environment from climate change,pollution,resource depletion and other threats by the World Conservation Union (IUCN).In his keynote address,IUCN Director General Achim Steiner called for concerted international action to establish a global representative network of MPAs by 2012.
