The proceedings of the state level cashew seminar jointly organised by the Directorate of Cashewnut and Cocoa Development, Cochin (Govt. of India) and the Department of Horticulture, Maharashtra state, pune-5
The soil and climatic conditions of the Konkan region of Maharashtra are very good for the cultivation of fruit crops particularly mango, cashew, sapota, coconut etc. The cashewnut being a drought reasistant crop can be successfully cultivated on light to medium soils in Konkan and considered as poor man's crop. This crop is useful in checking the soil erosion and conserving the water. Cashew is very good for earing foreign currency. Considering all the advantages of the cashew cultivation, the Govt. of Maharashtra included this crop in the Employment Gureentee Scheme linked horticulture development programme implemented since 1990. The farmers from the Konkan region responded very well to this scheme and the area under cashew crops is increasing every year. At present in Maharashtra 1,53,000 ha. area is under this crop and Maharahtra is first in the country in respect of area. The productivity in the state is also highest i.e. 1500 kg./ ha. in the country.
