Google is to acquire Motorola Mobility for approximately US$12.5 billion (?8.8 billion), representing a 63% premium on the closing price of Motorola Mobility ahead of the announcement. While Google's acquisition of the company is being seen by observers primarily as a way for it to strengthen the position of the Android operating platform in the smartphone market, and in particular to strengthen Google's hand in patent disputes with rivals including Microsoft and Apple, Google CEO Larry Page and Motorola Mobility CEO Sanjay Jha both made reference to the latter's TV business as well.
