The parallel with the modern gameis striking. Today's baseball players,like many professional athletes, are castas giants among men. But just likeCasey, they are capable of profoundmoral failure. In recent years, there has been ram-pant speculation that professional base-ball players have used illegal steroids toincrease their performance. With the evi-dence of abuse mounting, there has beenno joy in the proverbial Mudville, as fansand non-fans, alike, confront the sullyingof America's national pastime. For decades, anabolic steroidshave been used by some athletesto gain an edge in performance. Assteroids are thought to increase proteinsynthesis and, therefore, muscle mass andstrength, it is logical that some aspects ofperformance in sports would be enhanced.Indeed, there is little doubt that athletes insports that rely on explosive power—suchas track and field, swimming, and bicy-cling—can improve their performancethrough the careful administration of steroids into their training regimens. However, it is not immediately clearthat a baseball player would see animprovement in performance by usingsteroids. On the one hand, the logic ofincreased strength implies that a hitterin baseball could bat the ball with moreforce. On the other hand, the hitter mustfirst make contact with the pitched ball,and increased muscle mass may inhibit hisability to do so.
