摘要

Labor unions have played an important role in the history of environmental protection in the United States Prior to the rise of the contemporary environmental movement in the 1960s, the labor movement served as one of the most significant social forces advocating for resource conservation and environmental health (Dewey 1998, Gottlieb 1993). Unions were early advocates for clean water and air, wilderness protection, and sustainable forestry. They lent crucial support to environmental organizations atthe start of the modern environmental movement and they fought for such landmark pieces of environmental legislation as the Clean Ail and Clean Water Acts Labor's role in environmental protection still is important today Unions continue to support vital pieces of environmental legislation and many of the public officials who champion the cause of environmental protection would not have been elected without the backing of organized labor.
