摘要

The laboratory service is changing; patient expectations are increasing, whereas financial restraints are more imposing now than ever before. Advances in technology, which reduce the need to increase the work force as the workload increases, are nevertheless expensive. The spectrum of tests offered increases year by year. Against these pressures, the clinical laboratory service is continually improving the quality of its services. Test methods are being fine-tuned to produce values, which are nearer to the clinician's requirements. The purpose of accreditation is simple and straightforward. It is an external audit by non-biased third party. This external audit includes organization of an applicant department and its quality assurance programme. By declaring a defined standard of practice and having this independently confirmed by peer review, approved departments are able to offer reassurance to users and provide a hallmark of performance that is lacking in non-accredited laboratories.
