World economy is trying to recover from the clutches of economic meltdown and India is no exception, though not as severely affected as developed countries. Access to energy is essential to alleviating poverty - which is a fundamental driver of economic development and contributor to quality of life. We are one of the lowest per capita energy consuming economies in the World. In 2005, as against 1285 kilograms of oil equivalent (kgoe) per capita energy consumption of China and 8513 kgoe of USA, India's per capita consumption of energy has been 466 kgoe only. This is far below the World's average per capita consumption of 1795 kgoe. About 44% of our population is deprived of electricity. There has been 11 % energy shortage and 12% shortfall in peak demand in 2008-09.
