Building the Future: The Solar Decathlon as Education for Future Sustainability Leadership

The Solar Decathlon Competition is a biennial program that challenges international collegiate teams to design, build, and operate high-efficiency solar-powered houses that are cost-effective, energy-efficient, and attractive. Organizers claim that the Solar Decathlon experience provides students with an unparalleled and transformative educational opportunity that consolidates student knowledge, builds their character, and prepares them for leadership in the green economy. Yet, despite growing worldwide appreciation for the Solar Decathlon learning experience, the specific learning and the mechanisms through which this learning is delivered have still to be characterized and explained. This study arose from witnessing firsthand the struggles faced by a Solar Decathlon team when collaborating across disciplines, and how they moved toward successful integration and completion of the project. The study centered on interviewing 24 students who participated in the design, construction, and operation ofa house for a 2010 Solar Decathlon event. Questions were aimed at understanding their learning and learning process, particularly in relation to interdisciplinary collaboration. Examination of responses suggests that though the learning process entailedassociated cycles of conflict and resolution, students developed a number of individual and collective competencies. Interpretation indicates that the difficulty of the process was instrumental for acquisition of interdisciplinary competencies. These skills contribute to overall sustainability competence and match those identified by industry leaders as essential for leadership in the global economy. The study concludes that the Solar Decathlon experience offers students the opportunity to develop the range of competencies needed to help society's shift to a green economy and lead it to a more sustainable future.
