A study was conducted to investigate the vitamin E levels in Malaysian women. The fatty acid composition and tocopherol (T) and tocotrienol (T3) contents in breast adipose tissue of malignant and benign breast lumps were determined. Results showed that in malignant lumps, the mean content of alpha-T in breast adipose tissue was 126.2 micro g/g adipose tissue while in benign lumps, it was 147.0 micro g/g. The mean gamma -T and delta -T (1.26 vs. 0.65) levels were also reduced in malignant patients as compared to benign. While it was not significant for gamma -T (P=0.363), the reduced level of delta -T was significant (P=0.033). In breast cancer patients, the mean content of alpha , gamma and delta -T3 in breast adipose tissue was 13.73 micro g/g adipose tissue. In patients with benign lumps, it was 20.0 micro g/g adipose tissue. Mean T3 value was significantly lower in breast cancer patients than in subjects with benign lumps. There was a decrease in alpha -T3 (P=0.006), gamma -T3 (P=0.047) and delta -T3 (P=0.018) in malignant tissue compared to benign. The distribution of tocotrienols with alpha and gamma -T3 being higher also reflects closely the composition of tocotrienols in palm oil.
