This may go down in the history books as the first newsprint price cycle in which some of the most efficient producers in the industry failed to run full at any point in the cycle. It is becoming increasingly likely that suppliers should not expect any help from the demand side in tightening up the market. If that is the case, the only way the current up-cycle will continue into next year is if the newsprint companies take more downtime than they are today. As a result, profits over the cycle in thenewsprint sector may disappoint even as we begin to look down the road at the next pricing retrenchment, whenever that might be. And when prices do start downward again, the shock to an overleveraged industry may lead to additional restructuring.
