When the Russian government submits its proposals next month for an expanded and accelerated privatization program, the petroleum industry's attention will be fixed firmly on what lies in store for state oil giant Rosneft. Moscow currently has a 75.16% stake in the 2.3 million barrel per day producer, but if that interest is reduced, or even divested completely, Rosneft could lose its privileged position in the Russian oil patch - and with it much of its allure for potential foreign partners.
