Assessment of Research-Doctorate Programs in the United States: Humanities

Results from a comprehensive assessment of the quality of doctoral programs in the sciences, engineering, and the humanities are reported in a five-volume series. This volume presents results for 522 programs in nine humanities disciplines: art history, classics, English, French, German, linguistics, music, philosophy, and Spanish. The assessment focuses on programs awarding research doctorates and their effectiveness in preparing students for careers in research. Twelve separate measures related to program size, characteristics of recent graduates, reputational survey results, and university library size were compiled in the evaluation of every program. Although earlier studies have relied almost exclusively on reputational surveys, the report emphasizes the importance of viewing program quality from the perspective of multiple indices and dimensions. No single, composite ranking of doctoral programs is provided.
