This research was concerned with differentials in characteristics of children coming from families of varying sizes with special attention to the only child. Since most of the parents tend to believe that only children are handicapped in their development compared to children with siblings, there must be strong reasons (physical, psychological, socio-economic, etc.) for not having a second child. The study was designed to investigate the characteristics of only children compared to those reared in multiple-child families. The study was based on the Health Examination Survey (HES) data, Cycles II and III of the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS).
