Acoustic emission generated during friction testing of sheet metal strips in a211u001eBUT (bending under tension test) has been analyzed with respect to parameters as 211u001esliding speed, contact pressure, tool surface roughness, lubricants, and sheet 211u001ematerial coating. The results show that the RMS-voltage (root mean square) is a 211u001ebetter measure than the AE-power for quantifying parameter variations. Sliding 211u001espeed, sheet material, tool surface roughness were found to affect the RMS-211u001evoltage significantly. It is proposed that the acoustic sensor measure the 211u001eploughing component rather than the adhesive component of the coefficient of 211u001efriction. The results indicate that the transition from boundary to 211u001emicrohydrodynamic lubrication can be registered with the acoustic sensor.
