Regenerating an adsorbent loaded with sulfur or a sulfur-containing compound as adsorbate, comprises (a) providing the loaded adsorbent, (b) contacting the loaded adsorbent with at least one sulfur or sulfide-oxidizing microorganism, where the microorganism is present in pure culture or in mixed culture, (c) regenerating the loaded adsorbent by oxidizing the sulfur or sulfur-containing compound by the microorganism. Independent claims are also included for: (1) use of sulfur-oxidizing or sulfide-reducing microorganism in the above method; and (2) a device for regenerating the adsorbent loaded with sulfur and/or a sulfur-containing compound as adsorbate, comprising a sealable container (1), in which an open filing device (4) is detachably mounted, where a device for dosing and/or discharging liquid and/or nutrient solutions is attached to the container, and a device for dosing and/or discharging gases is attached to the container, which is a ventilation tube optionally comprising an inlet valve (10) and/or an outlet valve (11). The ventilation tube is optionally designed as membrane gassing module. The container comprises at least one measuring- and controlling element for measuring values required for culturing micro-organisms, where measuring element is designed as measuring electrode for measuring pH, conductivity of the medium within the container, oxygen concentration, sulfate concentration, and/or temperature, and optionally a sampling point (14) is attached to the container.
