The system measures the amplitude of the vibrations caused by the cutting process and uses the increase in this amplitude as an indication of tool wear. The cutting frequency of the teeth is filtered from the spectrum of vibrations. The vibrations can be measured using e.g. an accelerometer fitted directly onto the machine or using a microphone near the machine. An acoustic or optical signal is released or the machine is stopped when a given amplitude is exceeded.
