Improving genotypes and understanding phenotypes: breeding forages for livestock and the environment

This review considers some recent developments in our understanding of rumen function that offer new breeding opportunities for forages. The review summarises recent progress in genome analysis, mapping, marker-assisted selection, introgression and transformation in both grasses and legumes and describes how breeding targets are being influenced by the emerging concept of plant cell death in herbivores and potentially associated protein (and lipid) protection mechanisms. The current status and future opportunities for plant breeding in the improvement of forages for enhanced livestock production and reduced environmental pollution are summarised. The review is presented in two distinct parts, initially considering developments in forage breeding and then undertaking on to explain how these methodologies can be best exploited through better understanding of phenotypic expression of selected traits and characteristics. The focus is on temperate forages, although viable applications extend across the full range of livestock production systems.
