Block mode teaching (BMT) is a model that students focus on one subject at a time over a four-week period. The benefits of block mode include the self-determined study pace and improved success rate. This paper presents the design of two block mode Problem Based Learning (PBL) engineering units, in which first-year engineering students have the opportunities to learn engineering knowledge while experiencing using the knowledge in real-world practices. Two different PBL unit delivery structures are demonstrated, namely a “Learning Ahead of Practice (LAP) mode” and “Learning in Practice (LIP) mode” in which the teaching formats have been designed and implemented to effectively deliver the contents in a four-week block period. Students are able to consistently work on their design, practice, and participate in teamwork while focusing only on one unit at a time. This in turn increases engagement and performance and raises the quality of learning.
