Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are an important class of atmospheric pollutants. VOCs have been detected and identified using many different mass spectrometric (MS) techniques, namely proton-transfer reaction MS (PTR-MS), selected-ion flow tube MS (SIFT-MS), and selected-ion chemical ionization MS (SICI-MS). In each of these techniques, selected reagent ions ionize the analyte by chemical ionization. Proton transfer ionization occurs when the proton affinity of the analyte is greater than that of the reagent. Charge transfer ionization occurs when the recombination energy of the reagent ion is greater than the ionization energy of the analyte. Other ionization pathways such as hydride abstraction or hydroxide abstraction are also possible, depending on the analyte and the ionizing reagent. The work presented here uses SICI-MS to distinguish isomeric VOCs by varying the reagent ions used for chemical ionization.
