The synthesis of the first examples of siloxide-containing Mn(III) porphyrinates has been accomplished via a novel silyl group transfer from sulfur to oxygen. Investigations into the pathway of formation of the siloxide complexes suggest that initial reduction of Mn(III) by the silanethiols produces [Mn~(II)(TPP)], which reacts with oxygen in the presence of (R_3Si)_2S_2 to afford the siloxide complexes. Solid-state structures of the complexes confirm the Mn-O linkage with short distances of 1.92 A. Characterization of the complexes was made possible using APCI. This use of APCI represents the first successful application of mass spectrometry to unambiguously identify oxygen-bound manganese porphyrinates.
